    Seminar Title/Topic: Proteomics in the genomics era
    Description: Important regulation of pathways and processes occurs at the post-translational level and hence the study of proteins or proteomics (in addition to nucleic acids or genomics) is fundamentally important. We are interested in how post-translational modifications (PTMs) control primary C- and N-metabolism in leaves, and also the hormone signaling pathways that control plant growth. The ultimate goal is to identify new strategies to increase crop yield and/or biomass accumulation.

    Seminar Title/Topic: Protein Oxidation in Peroxisomes
    Description: The proteins in peroxisomes are exposed to metabolically generated hydrogen peroxide. Thus, peroxisomal proteins, such as catalase and isocitrate lyase, are subject to oxidation which can be detected using western blotting techniques. The location of the sites of oxidation in the proteins is determined by mass spectroscopy of peptide fragments of the proteins tagged with biotin. Undergraduate students from other universities come to Washington DC to join in this project during the summers,

    Seminar Title/Topic: Alternative Splicing of pre-mRNAs in plants in the genomic era
    Description: Recent completion of plant genomes has revealed that the coding region of about 80% of nuclear genes is interrupted by non-coding introns. Primary transcripts (precursor-mRNAs) with introns can undergo alternative splicing to produce multiple transcripts from a single gene by differential use of splice sites thereby increasing the transcriptome and proteome complexity within and between cells and tissues. Alternative splicing in plants is largely an unexplored area of gene expression, as this phenomenon was considered rare. However, recent genome-wide computational analyses have revealed that alternative splicing in flowering plants is far more prevalent than previously thought. Our recent studies show that pre-mRNAs of many splicing regulators are extensively alternatively spliced and abiotic stresses have a dramatic effect on alternative splicing of these pre-mRNAs. Our ongoing efforts to analyze genome-wide analyses of alternative splicing in response to abiotic stresses and its relevance to stress tolerance will be discussed.

    Seminar Title/Topic: Plant circadian rhythms
    Description: The ability of an organism to measure time is the product of a cellular biological clock. Many phenomena controlled by the biological clock cycle on a daily basis and are called circadian rhythms. My goal is to understand the genetic and biochemical mechanisms by which an organism measures time and uses that temporal information to regulate gene expression and cellular physiology. I will discuss our ongoing genetic and molecular biological approaches to define the plant clock mechanism.
