Testimonials for Pioneer Member Lee McIntosh

Joseph Hirschberg – From 1982 to 1984, I worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Lee McIntosh at the Plant Research Laboratory (PRL) of Michigan State University. I was Lee’s first postdoc. Lee was an outstanding scientist and a wonderful and highly generous mentor. He brought the gospel of molecular biology to the PRL, then a leading plant biochemistry and physiology department. His pioneering scientific studies and unique contributions are an important milestone in understanding the biology of plastids and mitochondria.

Larry Smart – I am grateful for Lee’s guidance, support, and mentorship as a graduate student in his lab. He was one of the first to clone and sequence plant genes in Bogorad’s lab, and he trained me and others in the lab with care and personal attention for those techniques. He inspired me to collaborate across disciplines, which has been important throughout my career. We lost Lee much too soon, but the impact of his too short scientific life has been significant.
