Machi Dilworth – Publishing a second journal, the Plant Cell, was one of the major events in ASPB’s history. I happened to be in a place where I could observe its birth up-close, and I can state with some level of authority that the success of the Plant Cell is mostly due to Bob’s leadership as the inaugural Editor-in-Chief. He had a vision for the journal, and he compromised nothing. I know for a fact that he rejected invited papers if they did not meet the quality standard he set. I have also known Bob as a scientist for a long time, and I think in creating the Plant Cell, he simply applied the same high standards he held, and still holds, for himself. I think we could say that Bob created the Plant Cell in his own image.
